Park Lane Primary School

Lifelong Learning Together

Mathematics

At Park Lane school we teach maths through showing its application to real life. The children are encouraged through; whole school events: number day and maths week; the tuck shop and trips to use maths knowledge about money, number and measurement in a practical way.

Maths is not just about learning key concepts (such as timetables); it is about allowing the children to select which mathematical approach is most effective in different scenarios.

We encourage the children to discover their own way to answer a problem, using the skills that they have been taught. So that they can independently apply the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.

It is not the case that some pupils can do mathematics and others cannot.

Park lane pupils are encouraged to build confidence and resilience that enables everyone to achieve.
