The spring term has been short, but eventful. The children and staff have participated in several exciting projects, classes have presented entertaining and informative assemblies, and in line with what they’ve been learning as part of the curriculum, the children have attended excursions to various relevant locations.
Early in March, the school was honoured to receive a visit from a member of the Royal family when we participated in the Clean For the Queen campaign. HRH Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, attended an assembly celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday and highlighting HM’s achievements during her 64 years of reign. The Duke, accompanied by the Mayor of Brent Leslie Jones MBE, Councillor Mohammed Butt, and senior members of staff, joined 30 children and several governors to clean and tidy King Edward 7th Park, adjacent to the school. Earlier this term, I met with the parents/carers who attended the Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning. Among other things, we discussed the curriculum and got to sample some of the school dinners provided by our caterer Taylor Shaw.
Park Lane Primary School received a visit from the Wembley Fire Brigade to educate Key Stage 1 on how to stay safe during a fire. Year 1 were introduced to the 7 Day Healthy Challenge, designed to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, when A-Life visited the school during the spring term.
Year 6 has been busy attending booster sessions on Saturdays, as part of our constant drive to raise standards and ensure that every child reaches their potential. These sessions also took place during half term and will continue throughout the 1st week of the Easter holiday break. Year 6 also participated in Staying Safe Workshops, which aim to assist with the transition from Primary to Secondary school.
In January, the school celebrated English week with a performance by the Hobgoblin Theatre of The Greatest Fairy Tale Ever Told. During Maths’ week, all the children participated in maths workshops run by The Problem Solving Company, and on March 3rd, the children dressed as a character from their favourite book, for World Book Day.
During this spring term, there have been several class trips to reinforce what the children have learnt as part of the curriculum. Both Year 2 and the Nursery have visited the Science Museum. Year 4 attended the British Museum and Year 5, the London Maritime Museum. Reception enjoyed a fantastic day out at Odd’s farm, while Year 3 made a tour of Wembley Stadium.
The PSA raised money towards their ‘school bus’ fund during their Valentine’s Day cake sale, and their prize draw at the Annual Easter Bonnet Parade. The children and staff produced some spectacular Easter bonnets and enjoyed participating in the class Easter egg hunts.
We have also seen some spectacular class assemblies, with subjects ranging from Ancient Greeks, Beowulf and Moses, to Beauty and the Beast, and the Little Red Hen. The year 4 Easter production was one of the highlights of the spring term.
This last week of term, the school celebrated Art Week. All children, in every year level, participated in art workshops run by renowned artist Ainsley Yearwood. The children produced amazing paintings, sketches, sculptures and masks. Parents were also invited to attend special workshops designed for children and parents, enabling them to demonstrate their artistic talents. Mr. Yearwood has worked with the recipients of Pupil Premium Grants throughout the term. Their art work, along with the work produced during Art Week was on display in the school hall during the last day of term.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy Easter and a well-deserved break during the holidays. Miss. Olive Barbulescu , our Spanish teacher, is moving on and we would like to thank her for her time at Park Lane Primary School and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours. Please encourage your children to participate in the Readathon during the holiday period. All money raised goes towards buying books for children’s hospice, and promotes the improvement of your child’s reading skills.
